Winter Safety Basics
Even though you may not feel thirsty in the cold, be sure to drink plenty of water when exercising.
Keeping warm but taking off layers to prevent sweating is important to prevent frostbite. Be sure to dress in layers and cover up when standing or sitting.
Cotton gets wet and stays wet, from the snow and from sweating, which will cause you to chill. Instead, use wool or polyester as under-layers. Hypothermia is a real danger in winter time.
Protect your head
Be sure to wear a hat as your head is a major source of heat loss.
Even in winter, it is important to protect from the sun. The rays can reflect off the white snow making sunburn a very real problem.
Be sure to recreate with a friend or family members. Children should always be in view of an adult.
Learn to fall
Practice falling into the uphill slope without using your arms to brace yourself. Try to roll and fall on your side or buttocks.
Be sure to stay on marked trails and stay in bounds to avoid dangers.
Avoid tree wells
The area directly under trees is unstable, loose snow , which can collapse under you. Beware.
Know avalanche danger
Stay away from steep slopes, those over 30 degrees.
Carry a compass and map
Don't assume you can follow your trail back as wind, rain or snow could obliterate your tracks.
